Monosodium glutamate also known as MSG is recognized by the FDA as “safe”, but can trigger any number of unwanted signs and symptoms, including:

  • Skin problems like hives, rashes and intense itching
  • Digestive problems like nausea and vomiting
  • Neurological problems like headaches and migraines – as well as more serious issues like seizures
  • Musculoskeletal problems like weakness and jaw pain
  • Cardiovascular problems like a rapid or weak heartbeat.

Despite these dangers MSG is still widely used in the food industry. MSG plays an important role in keeping consumers addicted to low-nutrient and calorie dense foods. When your food has MSG it triggers a hunger response so even after you have eaten quite a bit of food, you still feel hungry. This leads to overeating, specifically more MSG foods, and at that point it becomes a cycle. Considering that other artificial ingredients like high fructose corn syrup also tend to be addictive, it is not surprising that two out of every three adults inAmerica are now considered to be overweight or obese.

MSG can be harmful as listed above. It can cause fatal allergic reactions, stimulate a food addiction that can be extremely difficult to break, and affects the entire body if it is consumed. The best way to avoid MSG is to be diligent at label reading while grocery shopping. It is up to you to protect your family as the FDA continues to label these ingredients “safe” for our foods.
